Mhofu in Marloth Park South-Africa
Marloth Park is situated in the province of Mpumalanga on the N4, east of Nelspruit. Marloth Park – a wildlife safari holiday park and village – covers 1,548 hectares and has been in existence in South Africa since 1977. It borders largely on the Kruger National Park, with the Krokodil River forming the natural boundary. There are 4,458 private plots, each with a minimum area of 1,600 m², featuring bushland and unpaved roads (dirt roads). The only tarmac road, Olifantrijlaan, is the main road through Marloth Park. This also marks the boundary of the plots: on one side lies Kruger Park (where Mhofu is situated) and on the other side lies Lionspruit (a private reserve). The remaining roads are unpaved.
Marloth Park is located in the Lowveld. Mild winters, warm summers. Subtropical climate! The seasons are reversed; our winter is the South African summer. Holiday home Mhofu is situated in this game reserve. Exotic plants or animals are prohibited. You may see wild animals, including sometimes predators, in your garden or elsewhere in the village, so caution is necessary. Marloth Park is a malaria area. Marloth Park has its own municipal government. Safety, peace, and poaching are monitored 24 hours a day. There are strict rules regarding animals, nature, noise pollution, and traffic regulations. There are two gates. The interests of the village are represented by the Marloth Park Property Owners Association / MPPOA. In 2002, the village was enclosed by security fences.
Marloth Park has its own nature reserve, called Lionspruit. You can spot lions, leopards, rhinos, or buffaloes here. It is about 1,500 hectares in size and enclosed by a secure fence. The wildlife is similar to that of Kruger National Park. There are no elephants in Lionspruit. You are allowed to leave your car in certain areas, but always be mindful of the wild animals. The dirt roads are leveled every so often, but keep in mind that they are not maintained exceptionally well. The Honorary Rangers have an ambitious plan to upgrade Lionspruit and work on this daily.
Electricity
The whole of South Africa is struggling with an electricity problem. The government has not invested in Eskom, the national electricity company in South Africa. As a result, there are frequent outages. Usually, the outage lasts about 2 hours, but unfortunately, in some failures, this can be longer. We have no influence whatsoever on this.
Water supply
Marloth Park gets its water from the Crocodile River. During droughts, this is a major problem for all residents of the surrounding area. Therefore, there are often restrictions on using large amounts of water. Sometimes, there is simply no water available. That is why we purchased a JoJo (a water tank), and now there is always water!
